Each
of the four areas that make up North East England has its
own unique character.
Experience Northumberland's beautiful coastline and wide
open spaces and County Durham's spectacular countryside and
medieval heritage. Enjoy walking, sailing and sightseeing
in Tees Valley and shop in the elegant market towns. Discover
the breathtaking architecture, cosmopolitan city culture
and beaches of Newcastle Gateshead, Sunderland, North Tyneside
and South Tyneside.
You can cycle through sunlit forests or along coastal paths ablaze with
wild flowers. Stroll from tearoom to coffee shop or walk the Pennine Way.
Discover thousands of years of history and see the sights – including
two World Heritage Sites in Hadrian’s Wall and Durham Castle and
Cathedral.
We've got some stunning contemporary art venues too: BALTIC (a former 1950s
flourmill overlooking the Tyne), the Biscuit Factory (Britain's biggest
original art store), Hartlepool Art Gallery (formerly a Gothic revival
church) and the Berwick Gymnasium Gallery. Opening this autumn, Mima: Middlesbrough
Institute of Modern Art, promises to add further internationally acclaimed
exhibitions.
What makes the NE a green destination?
North East England has a vast National Park, Heritage Coastline and two
Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). The region offers unique
countryside, coastline and attractive historic cities and towns. With
its clean air, open spaces, it’s hardly surprising that North East
England is a haven for wildlife including such rarities as red squirrel,
black grouse and otters. Tourism businesses recognize the importance
of protecting this unique landscape and a growing number are joining
the GTBS to ensure the region retains its best features and lives up
to visitors’ expectations.
