GREEN TOURISM BUSINESS
SCHEME |
Everywhere
you go in Dumfries & Galloway you will come across some
of the most beautiful countryside in the British Isles. It’s
the ideal habitat for a spectacular array of wildlife, so you
need to keep your eyes peeled when you visit. We have otters,
red squirrels, red kites, buzzards, seals, the occasional dolphin,
nightjars, and wild deer as well as rare and beautiful flowers.
The entire Scottish population of the natterjack toad and approximately
20% of the Scottish red squirrel population are found in Dumfries & Galloway.
Dumfries & Galloway has 3 National Scenic Areas which
were designated over twenty years ago for their outstanding
beauty and in order to protect them as part of Scotland’s
heritage, selected for their characteristic features of scenery
comprising a mixture of richly diverse landscapes including
prominent landforms, coastline, sea and freshwater lochs,
rivers, woodlands and moorlands.
The 300 square miles of the
Galloway Forest Park is at the very heart of the region,
home for wild goats, red
deer, golden eagles and even works of art which are found
hidden within the forest. Each work of art celebrates the
unique sense of place found within the forest and specifically
responds to the place in which it is situated.
WWT Caerlaverock
aims to conserve wetlands and their diversity by bringing
people closer to wildlife. Each October, Barnacle
Geese return to winter here on the Solway’s Saltflats
and marshes. This population has increased from fewer than
500 birds in the 1940s, to more than 25,000 now.
You’ll
be made very welcome in this naturally inspiring land.
