GREEN TOURISM BUSINESS
SCHEME |
There's a different
world waiting for you in Shetland:
A world where wildlife is truly wild, where otters and seals play in quiet
coves, and the air is full of the sound of wild birds, crowding the jagged
cliffs in huge and noisy colonies.
Being in Shetland is unlike being anywhere else, a fact that's evident
from our unique culture, our dialect, our heritage, even our place names.
Our beautiful and dramatic ice carved landscape is steeped in treasures
of history that go back over 5,000 years.
'Eco-tourism' is growing rapidly in Shetland as more and more travelers
discover the natural wonders on Britain's northern doorstep.
Once in Shetland, it easy to explore and see the wildlife. Ranger serices
run by Shetland Amenity Trust, Fair Isle Bird Observatory and Foula Heritage
offer walks and Scottish Natural Heritage and RSPB can help you explore
their nature reserves.
The top attractions are close encounters with seabirds and sea mammals
but Shetland also has fascinating plants, insects and underwater wildlife.
Shetland's seabird colonies are world-famous because they're so big, so
diverse, so scenically spectacular and so accessible. No fewer than 21
of the 24 British seabird species occur in Shetland.
Shetland is also a brilliant place to watch sea mammals like seals, porpoises
and otters. For guaranteed, close-up views of both species of British seals,
Shetland is as good as it gets.
